Sorry sorry sorry, but I'm an old movie nut, and the weirder the better! So I figured I'd do a profile on some of the wonkier pictures. Take a look! You might find something you like! Or, it might give you nightmares in which case, I apologize.
First Up!
Disney's 1985 Return to Oz
Starring Fairuza Balk as a Dorothy that actually looks like a normal (if not slightly creepy) little girl, and directed by Walter Murch (he edited the God father and Ghost, also worked as a creative consultant on a super-creepy little claymation called "the adventures of mark twain https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AV2xURtTqgY , his full filmography is here http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004555/#director ) Return to Oz is one of those children's films (like Time Bandits, or Rankin Bass's Watership Down) that should NEVER BE SHOWN TO CHILDREN. Unless you want some character-building scars put on their psyche.
It's set in both an early 1900's mental institution (the kind where the doctor experiments with the healing properties of electricity) and a post-apocalyptic OZ. Children will be treated to the tortured screams of patients trapped in the basement, The rubble remains of the yellow-brick road, the witch Mombi's gallery of heads (and later on disturbingly low Man voice), watching the flesh melt from the poisoned Nome King's face, and worst of all THE WHEELERS.
In a time where terror has been beaten out by horror, and subtlety has given way to needles being shoved into a victim's eyeballs, Return to Oz is a breath of creepy fresh air. It proves that people don't need to be maimed horribly to make a movie scary. Walter Murch just has adapt your favorite children's story into a film.
If you can find a copy to rent, more power to ya! If not, there's a pretty speedy torrent available XP But in any case, please do treat yourself to this little snippet of Disney gone wrong with all the right results!
(If you won't do it for yourself, do it for the WHEELERS <333 )
